Definition and Standards of Manhole Cover Load Capacity
The load capacity of a manhole cover is defined as the maximum pressure it can withstand during a pressure test using a pressure testing machine per unit area. Heavy-duty manhole covers can typically withstand a weight of 40 tons. However, it's important to note that manhole cover load capacity is not the same as the capacity to withstand the weight of passing vehicles. The standard is defined by GB/T 23858-2009, which divides the load capacity into six grades.
Practical Application of Load Capacity
Generally, the load capacity parameter of a manhole cover is less than the actual weight of the vehicles passing over it. For example, if a 5-axle heavy truck is to pass over the manhole cover, the manhole cover's load capacity should be at least 40 tons. This means the total weight of the heavy truck should not exceed 40 tons multiplied by 5, or 200 tons. The manhole cover's load capacity must be designed appropriately based on the weight of the vehicles to ensure safety.
