The pneumatic knife gate valve is a linear shut-off valve driven by a pneumatic actuator, also known as slide gate valve. Its core cut-off component is a thin blade-shaped gate plate, which cuts off medium flow by vertical lifting and lowering. Main components:

Pneumatic actuator (double-acting / single-acting spring return for fail-safe open/close)

Valve body (cast iron, ductile iron, WCB, stainless steel)

Knife blade gate with sharp cutting edge

Soft/hard sealing seat, packing gland, guide bracket

2. Core Working Principle

Compressed air serves as power source to push the piston inside the pneumatic actuator, converting air pressure into linear thrust to drive the knife blade up and down.

Valve open: Air pushes actuator to lift the knife gate fully away from flow channel, full bore unobstructed passage

Valve close: Actuator pushes blade down to tightly press against the sealing seat, cutting and intercepting medium; the sharp blade shears bundled fibers, mud lumps to avoid clamping medium leading to leakage Single-acting pneumatic type adopts spring reset design: once air supply fails, spring automatically closes or opens the valve to meet safety interlock requirements for production lines.

Add anti-rust lubricating grease to blade guide rails every 3 months to prevent jamming caused by medium scaling;

For slurry working conditions, clean the valve cavity regularly to avoid solid material accumulation locking the knife plate;

Inspect air pipeline for air leakage, insufficient air pressure will lead to incomplete valve opening and closing.

8. Industry Position & Comparative Advantage vs Other Valves

Compared with butterfly valve: knife gate valve can cut solid impurities, butterfly valve is easy to be stuck by sludge and fibers. Compared with ordinary wedge gate valve: much thinner body, lower cost, better performance for slurry medium, but not applicable for high-pressure pure gas/oil pipelines. Compared with ball valve: lower cost for large diameter, strong anti-blocking ability, but not suitable for high-precision flow regulation.

Pneumatic knife gate valve is the preferred special cut-off valve for solid-liquid mixed medium pipelines, occupying an irreplaceable position in environmental protection, mining, papermaking and powder processing industries.
